Halle Berry will host “For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots,” a celebration of African-American veterans that will air on PBS stations in February.

Using primary source material including letters, diaries, speeches and military records, “Liberty” aims to document African-American battlefield accomplishments dating back to the Revolutionary War and its first casualty, Crispus Attucks.

Louis Gossett, Jr. is among those exec producing the special, which will be introduced by Colin Powell and narrated by Avery Brooks, with choral arrangements by Andrae Crouch. Frank Martin produced, co-wrote and directed.

“Our goal is to raise public consciousness about this extraordinary and little-known aspect of our nation’s history,” Martin said.

Others in the voice cast include Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Susan Sarandon, Robert Duvall, Danny Glover, Jeffrey Wright, Sam Elliot and John Amos. “Liberty” was shot on location in 20 states as well as Europe.

The project will also be released on DVD in February. Other exec producers are Hillard Elkins, Dennis Considine, Richard Hull and Kevin Clark.
